Astel HBsAg®
Rapid Test for Hepatitis B surface
Antigen
Hepatitis B is a viral
infection of the liver. Many cases of acute hepatitis B occur sporadically with
no known source and studies have shown that prior unrecognized infection is
common.
The infection is
transmitted through exchange of body fluids e.g. blood, semen, breast milk, and
in some circumstances saliva. People most at risk include: anybody who has
unprotected sexual intercourse; intravenous drug users who share needles and
syringes; health care workers in contact with potentially contaminated blood or
body fluids; babies born to mothers with the virus; anyone in intimate contact
with the infected person.
Hepatitis B Surface Antigen
(HBsAg) is a biomarker for this infection which can be detected in the blood,
plasma or serum of infected individuals.
Astel HBsAg® is a highly specific and sensitive, visually read, qualitative
immunoassay for the detection of HBsAg. HBsAg assays can be used to screen
blood and blood products to prevent transmission of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) to
recipients of these products.
HBsAg assays are also
routinely used to diagnose suspected Hepatitis B Virus infection and to monitor
the status of infected individuals i.e. whether the patient’s infection has
resolved or the patient has become a chronic carrier of the virus.
